Fisher Price Rock N Play Sleeper- What Parents Need to Know About This Important Recall

On April 9, 2019, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urged the Consumer Product Safety Commission to immediately recall all Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play Sleepers in a response to an analysis by Consumer Reports.Their analysis showed that the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper has been tied to at least 32 known infant deaths between 2011 and 2018, often by asphyxiation. Though the sleeper is recommended by the manufacturer only for children under 3 months of age, there have been associated deaths of younger babies, too. According to the chair of the AAP Task Force on SIDS, Rachel Moon, MD, " It does not meet the AAP's recommendations for a safe sleep environment for any baby. Infants should always sleep on their back, on a separate, flat and firm sleep surface without any bumpers or bedding."In response, Fisher-Price did issue a voluntary recall of all models which includes about 5 million of the infant soothers, under the Consumer Product Safety Commission's Fast Track recall process. If you have one it is recommend that you stop using it immediately and contact the company.

More To Know

Fisher-Price is only one of several brands of similar multi-functional incline play, swing, and sleep combination baby items. Unfortunately, simply choosing to use a different product does not offer a higher level of safety. According to The AAP website, "the AAP does not recommend inclined sleep products like the Rock 'n Play, or any other products for sleep that require restraining a baby." The AAP offers tips to ensure you provide your baby with a safe sleep environment, giving everyone peace of mind (and restful sleep). If you feel it is necessary for your baby to sleep in an inclined position for medical reasons, please discuss this with your baby's pediatrician for ideas and options that are safe and effective. For more information about this important recall, visit the Consumer Reports website.
